Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

Massive Open Online Course (Mooc)

1. Purpose
Students at BIT Mesra have the option to select either MOOC courses or Open
Elective courses
. To ensure that they complete the appropriate course on time and
facilitate a smooth credit transfer, it is important to adhere to the following
guidelines.
2. Eligibility for MOOC Courses
Students can enroll only in MOOC courses offered by NPTEL through the Swayam Portal
(https://swayam.gov.in/). The students are advised to choose courses from NPTEL which are having direct relevance to their respective programs. They can contact their MOOC coordinator while choosing the courses. Courses from other online platforms will not be eligible for
credit transfer.
3. Credit Requirements

To earn 3 credits, students must complete a 12-week MOOC course. Shorter courses will
not be eligible for credit transfer. For 2 credits, students should complete an 8-week
MOOC course from NPTEL.
4. Enrollment Process
a. Swayam Registration: Register for the chosen NPTEL course on the Swayam portal,
completing the registration process and paying any applicable fees.
b. Institute Registration: Concurrently, students should register for the MOOC in the institute’s ERP portal.
system during the official registration period. This step is crucial for ensuring that the
MOOC grades are included in the semester results.
5. Documentation
a. Provide details of your MOOC course, including the course code, name, and exam
date, to your department’s MOOC coordinator.
b. Submit both hard and soft copies of the Swayam registration confirmation to your
MOOC coordinator.
6. Course Completion Requirements
a. Complete all assignments and the final exam to receive the course certificate. Failure
to complete any component, even if the student score above the passing percentage, will result in not receiving a certificate from Swayam.

b. The minimum passing marks are 40% for undergraduate students and 50% for
postgraduate and Pre-PhD
 coursework students.
7. Credit Transfer
Credits will be transferred to your academic record only after the successful completion of
the course, meeting the passing marks, and receiving the certificate.
8. Reattempt Policy
If you do not pass the course, you must re-register for the course in both Swayam and
ERP during the next semester to attempt it again.

If a student fails to obtain the minimum required marks or does not earn a valid certificate for the registered MOOC course, they will not be permitted to opt for an Open Elective offered by the institute as a replacement.

In such cases, the student will be required to:

o    Re-register for a relevant MOOC course on SWAYAM in the next semesterand

o    Register for a make-up examination conducted by the institute in the next semester.

Students will not be allowed to substitute the MOOC with an institute-offered Open Elective course.

9. Submission of Certificate
After completing the MOOC, submit both hard and soft copies of the certificate to your
department’s MOOC coordinator. This certificate will be verified by the MOOC coordinator of the respective Department through QR code scanning.

10. Important Note
Courses from platforms other than NPTEL are not eligible for credit transfer. Ensure you
follow all guidelines carefully to avoid any academic discrepancies and ensure a smooth
credit transfer process.
