Welcome to the Department of Chemical Engineering at BIT Mesra. Chemical Engineering discipline is the interface of molecular sciences and engineering. The discipline is strongly dependent on the basic scientific fundamentals like Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biology along with other engineering disciplines like Materials Science, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Computer Science. The discipline offers unparalleled opportunities to change human civilization on all fronts.
The department was established in 1994 as Polymer Engineering and was renamed Chemical Engineering in 2011. The Department currently offers two undergraduate programs: one is B.TECH. (Chemical Engineering), NBA-accredited with 120 seat capacity, & another is B.TECH. (Food Engineering and Technology) with 30 seat capacity. The department has well-qualified faculties that provide a high standard of education and research in the diversified fields of Chemical Engineering. The academic curriculum of both the existing and proposed courses is up-to-date with CBCS in line with the recent scenario in the field while retaining the core concepts of the discipline. Faculties have introduced new electives related to their research and recent industrial developments. The department also provides facilities for doctoral research in the fields of Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science and Technology, Food Science and Technology and allied areas.
The department has state-of-the art laboratory facilities, comprising high-end equipments, processing lines, and cutting-edge computational facilities with modern simulation software to cater to modern industrial requirements. The department has 7 undergraduate laboratories covering the length and breadth of the core concepts of the disciplines, which include Heat and Mass Transfer lab, Fluid and Mechanical operations, Reaction Engineering, Process Control, Chemical synthesis, material processing, and computational labs with cutting-edge software like COMSOL, ASPEN, ANSYS, MAT LAB and others. In addition, the department has 4 advanced research lab covering the areas of recent advancements in energy, materials, process engineering, and computational fluid dynamics.
The Department received national recognition by winning the Gold Trophy for Plasticon Award 2012 in the category of Best Educational Institution Contributing to Plastics at the 8th International Plastics Exhibition and Conference, supported by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Government of India. The Department is recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, as a FIST Department. Over last few years, there has been an increase in sponsored research from DRDL, DRDO, DBT, DST, ICMR, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Coir Board, CCL, etc.
The Department has strong interaction with many industries to insist on our students taking part in industrial projects and to accept pre-placement offers as final year projects in the industry. Students are placed in esteemed core and software companies across the world. To name some of our recruiters, ADITYA BIRLA, TATA STEEL, ZINDAL, RELIANCE, PWC, STARLITE, GOOGLE, WIPRO, AMAZON, ACCENTURE and many more.
Students are also pursuing their higher studies at institutes of national and international repute, including different IITs, NITs, and foreign universities. Some of our alumni cracked Civil Service examinations as well.
In addition, the IICHE, BIT Mesra student chapter aims to make the students aware of the recent requirements and progress of chemical engineering and to give them the opportunity to be members of a wide chemical engineering fraternity. Almost every year, Chemical Engineering students organize the Technical Fest "Coalescence,” where experts from industry are invited for guest lectures. The department organizes industry visits from time to time to familiarize itself with the industry.
We welcome you all to visit our department for your valuable remarks and suggestions.
Vision
To be a centre of excellence for the provision of effective teaching/learning, skill development, and research in the areas of chemical engineering and allied areas through the application of chemical engineering principles.
To educate and prepare graduate engineers with critical thinking skills in the areas of chemical engineering & polymer science and engineering, who will be the leaders in industry, academia, and administrative services, both at national and international levels.
To inculcate a fundamental knowledge base in undergraduate students which enable them to carry out post-graduate study, do innovative interdisciplinary doctoral research, and to be engaged in long-life learning.
To train students in addressing the challenges in chemical, petrochemical, polymer, and allied industries by developing sustainable and eco-friendly technologies.
The Department of Chemical Engineering offers one Undergraduate four year programme, and Doctoral programme. The department also runs one five year Integrated M.Sc. Food Technology programme.
Programmes offered:
UG Programme:
Doctoral Programme:
Doctoral Programme in the fields of Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science & Engineering, and, Food Processing Technology.
B.Tech. (Chemical Engineering) programme:
B.Tech. (Chemical Engineering) programme is accredited by National Board of Accreditation, India. The first accreditation was from 01.07.2018 to 30.06.2021 which was further extended for one year till 30.06.2022. Based on the compliance report, the programme has been again accredited for the academic years 2022-2023 to 2024-25 i.e. upto 30.06.2025.
The minimum number of credits required for a B.Tech. (Chemical Engineering) degree is 168. The curriculum is based on Bloom’s Taxonomy.
As per curriculum, Programme core courses (38%), Programme Elective courses (11%) and Project work (9%) are offered by the department. Foundation science courses (15%) are offered by science department while General Engineering courses (14%) are offered by other engineering departments of the institute. For details click here.
