Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (Deemed to be University) is inviting applications from bright, qualified, and experienced candidates for recruitment to the post of Superintending Engineer (Civil) (on contract) at Mesra Campus in Ranchi.

Educational Qualification and Experience

Essential:

B.E./B.Tech. in Civil Engineering from a recognized UGC/AICTE-approved University/Institute or an Institute established under an Act of Parliament, with First Class or equivalent. (The qualification may be relaxed for deserving candidates).

Desirable:

Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized UGC/AICTE-approved University/Institute or an Institute established under an Act of Parliament.

Professional certification in Project Management, Construction Management or Contract Management would be an added advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of substantial professional experience in Civil Engineering after the first degree in engineering, preferably with significant experience in a senior/leadership position.
  • Proven experience in planning, design coordination, estimation, tendering, contract administration, execution, quality control and completion of major civil/infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and infrastructure projects including RCC, structural steel, masonry, roads, drainage, sewerage, water supply and other associated civil works.
  • Strong experience in estimation, costing, preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPR), preparation of Bills of Quantities (BOQ), tendering, evaluation of bids, and contract administration.
  • Proven track record of managing projects, budgets, schedules and technical teams while maintaining quality and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Experience in consultant and contractor management, negotiations, claims, variations/deviations, extensions of time, dispute resolution and contract closure.
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials, specifications, construction methodologies, current market rates and modern construction practices.
  • Experience in Government/CPWD/PWD/PSU/Autonomous Institutions/Universities/IITs/NITs or reputed infrastructure/engineering organizations would be an added advantage.

* Note: - Candidates who do not have adequate experience and competence will not be shortlisted or selected.

Key Responsibilities/ Desired Skills

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership for civil engineering and infrastructure works at BIT Mesra and its six external Off campuses.
  • Plan, coordinate and monitor civil projects from conceptualization and feasibility through design, tendering, execution, commissioning, completion and handing over.
  • Lead and guide engineers, supervisors and other technical personnel engaged in infrastructure and construction activities.
  • Review and scrutinize architectural, structural and civil drawings, design submissions, specifications, estimates, BOQs and Bar Bending Schedules, as applicable.
  • Prepare/review DPRs, detailed estimates, cost plans, tender documents and technical specifications for civil works.
  • Assist the Dean, Infrastructure & Planning and the Institute authorities in technical evaluation and decision-making relating to major civil projects.
  • Monitor physical and financial progress of projects and ensure adherence to approved scope, cost, quality and timelines.
  • Identify delays, bottlenecks, technical constraints and potential cost overruns and recommend timely corrective measures.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and technical reviews at BIT Mesra and Off Campuses, including periodic visits to Off Campuses as required.
  • Coordinate with Electrical, Mechanical, Water Supply, HVAC, Fire & Safety, Networking and other related services to ensure integrated project execution.
  • Coordinate effectively with consultants, contractors, vendors, statutory authorities and concerned Institute departments.

Desired Skills:

  • Strong technical and analytical capability with sound understanding of civil engineering principles and construction practices.
  • Leadership capability with a proactive, field-oriented and problem-solving approach.
  • Ability to independently assess technical issues and provide practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong communication, coordination, negotiation and contractor-management skills.
  • Ability to monitor multiple projects simultaneously across different locations.
  • Proficiency in preparing and reviewing estimates, BOQs, technical reports, project schedules and MIS/progress reports.
  • Working knowledge of relevant BIS standards, National Building Code, CPWD/PWD specifications and applicable statutory requirements.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Undertake any other civil engineering/infrastructure-related responsibility assigned by the Dean, Infrastructure & Planning/competent authority in the interest of the Institute.
  • Travel to BIT’s Off Campuses and project locations as required for inspection, review, coordination and monitoring.
  • Maintain high standards of professional integrity, transparency, accountability and responsiveness in all technical and contractual matters.
