The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established in 1972 at BIT Mesra and is a robust scientific community with highly qualified and competent academic staff, a large number of postgraduate students, research fellows and visiting scientists. It is well equipped for both teaching and research activities, which are undertaken across the whole spectrum of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Department encourages and supports studies involving a range of research strategies and has particular expertise and experience in both quantitative and qualitative research methods including studies of innovation.

The department conducts four-year undergraduate programme (B.Pharm.) in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The courses are recognized by the UGC, Pharmacy Council of India and AICTE.
Two-year postgraduate programme (M.Pharm.)
Specializations offered: Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy.
Academic Collaboration with Lotus Clinical Research Academy, Bangalore
Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, BIT, Mesra collaborated and signed a MOU with Lotus Clinical Research Academy, Bangalore (LCRA) to conduct following courses:
a) M.Pharm. in Clinical Research-4 semester programme (18 seats)
b) M.S. Clinical Research & Pharmacovigilance-4 semester programme(30 seats)
c) Post Graduate Diploma in Bioanalytical Techniques-2 semester programme(30 seats)
d) M.Pharm. in Quality Assurance & Regulatory Affairs-4 semester programme(30 seats)
Courses a, b and c have been introduced from Monsoon 2008 session where as d has been initiated from 2010. All these courses are self financed. First two semesters of M.Pharm & MS programmes and first semester of PG Diploma are conducted at BIT, Mesra after which students go to LCRA for their dissertation work. BIT and LCRA have equal share in the fees collected from students.
The syllabi of the courses are updated from time to time to incorporate recent developments achieved in these fields in National and International Scenario and to cater to the requirements of the Industries and various academic bodies.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers doctoral programmes in all disciplines. It also provides facilities for Doctoral Research in various fields of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Department has modern and sophisticated laboratory and workshop facilities for this purpose. More than 68 students are registered for Ph.D. in various disciplines in the Department currently.

International/National Linkage/ research collaboration:
The Department has received a number of research projects from the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Central Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Indian Forest Research Institute (IFRI), ICMR, Department of Science and Technology, Government of Jharkhand, etc.The Department has been granted two major projects namely FIST of DST and SAP of UGC.
Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, BIT, Mesra has recently collaborated with Institute of Biochemistry, University of Luebeck, Germany, Laboratoire Architecture et Fonction des Macromelécules Biologiques,Départment de Viologie Structurale et Drug Design,Marseille Cedex 09 France and Department of Crystallography and Biophysics,University of Madras, Chennai,India to work together in the area of Anti Viral Research.
Recently two Projects entitled
“Structure based discovery of Antivirals for the treatment of Chickenguniya virus infections” and
“Structure based design of Dengue virus protease inhibitors”
have been sanctioned under Indo German Collaborative Research by funding agencies DBT, Govt. of India and BMBF, Germany.
The Department also extends support to the other Departments of Hotel Management & Catering Technology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Instrumentation, Environmental Sciences & Engineering, and Medical Laboratory Technology at the University Polytechnic. Constitution of a Award for the ‘Best Outgoing Student’ of Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra by Lotus Clinical Research Academy, Bangalore. The student will be awarded a Gold Medal and citation.
The Department has been awarded 5 UGC BSR Fellowships and three CSIR Senior Research Fellowships in the year 2011.
Setting up of Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra Life Sciences/Bioscience Extension Centre in Bangalore.
The centre will focus on providing and conducting unique programs in the areas of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Applied Sciences.

Proposal to establish Centre of Excellence in Anti Viral Research at the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, BIT Mesra:
Prof. Dr. Rolf Higenfeld, Director, Institute of Biochemistry,University of Luebeck,Germany
had visited the Department of Pharm. Sciences in last January 2010 and had appreciated the infrastructure and expertise available at the Department. Dr.B.N.Sinha, while visiting the Institute of Prof. Rolf at the University of Luebeck Germany, discussed the possibility of having a Centre of Antiviral Research at BIT, Mesra. His proposal was appreciated and many other scientists also wished to cooperate in this venture. This Centre at BIT Mesra will attract the international interdisciplinary scientific community.
