Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ)

Two Post Graguate programmes are run in our department of Remote Sensing. Master of Technology in Remote Sensing (M Tech) and Master of Science in Geoinformatics (M Sc) in addition Doctoral Programme is also run in the Department.

GATE and Non GATE candidates can both get admission in the PG Programme  based on academic record.

GATE candidate need not appear for entrance examination. However, they have to attend the interview. Their total score (for Merit List) is calculated as per following criteria:

  • 80% weightage to GATE Score and
  • 20% weightage to Class 10, 12 and graduation / Postgraduation marks

Non-GATE candidates have to appear for written examination. Following

  • 80% weightage to marks obtained in Entrance Test and
  • 20% weightage to Class 10, 12 and graduation / Postgraduation marks

The world is being scanned constantly by highly sophisticated Earth Resources Satellites like IRS, Cartosat, LANDSAT, MODIS, SPOT, RADARSAT, IKONOS and Quickbird etc. to study and understand Earth system processes.  Recent technological advancements like GPS, UAV, Web & Mobile GIS has accelerated the applications of Geospatial domain in various activities including Natural Resources utilization and evaluation, Environment monitoring and Landuse / Landcover mapping etc. The wide-ranging application of this technology includes Agriculture mapping, forest monitoring, Disaster risk evaluation, Mineral exploration, Urban development planning, etc. An essential pre-requisite to avail these opportunities is the building of various indigenous capacities especially qualified manpower.

Students learn various techniques to handle and process huge Remote sensing data set related real-life requirements and challenges. After completion of the course the students will be able to collect, create spatial data & maps, maintain spatial geo-databases, execute spatial models, carry out Automated information extraction and online information dissemination.

In M.Tech. course (72 Credits), First year focuses on Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Remote Sensing, GIS, GPS, Photogrammetry, Programming, Geostatistics and various geo-spatial applications. Second year focuses mainly on developing Independent Research Skill.

In the first semester, the basic concepts, know-how procedures related to Geospatial Technology are taught to the students. The second semester delves deep into advanced concepts, modelling in GI domain along with modern photogrammetry using Satellite and UAV along with various Elective Modules. In due course the students are also provided with an opportunity to select OPEN ELECTIVE courses provided across the university. Students are also taught additional skills such as project management, research methods, data acquisition etc. The Third and Fourth semesters focus only on the RESEARCH THESIS. In the Research duration the student is supervised or co-supervised by the faculty.

Option for summer internship at various leading research centres in India is also provided time to time to encourage Academia-Industry Partnership. Students are also taken to field and other National Mapping organisations to expose them with actual process and activities in GI domain. In M.Tech. research work (in the 3rd and 4th Semester) students can go for field work as per their research requirement on their own.

For MSC, the period of theoretical study is spread over 3 semesters (covering various fundamental and advanced subjects in the field of Geoinformatics applications and research) with examination requirements at the end of each semester. In M.Sc. programme students have a guided field visit component exclusively as a part of academic semester which is not there in M.Tech separately. Fourth Semester will be allocated only for Research Project. Also in the 3rd semester there will be a mini Project which helps the student to orient towards research over a period of 1 year (i.e., 3rd and 4th semester project together) when they complete their degree course.  The Masters program requires 80 credit points. The detailed credit information is provided in the Course Structure.

Overall, M.Tech. programme aim to develop the student as an independent researcher with more in-depth scientific analytical component. On the other hand, M.Sc. programme handholds the students and develop them slowly and steadily in the Geoinformatics domain, and prepare them for both the industry requirement as well as for research path-way as per the student’s interest. In M.Tech. student has to carry out 2 full semesters of independent Research work. For M.Tech. admission one has to have Masters degree or B.Tech. degree with high CGPA. But for M.Sc., admission, graduate degree is enough.

GP Birla BIT Scholarship is available for meritorious student who are economically weak. But the scholarship will be decided only at the end of 1st Semester based on marks obtained in the 1st semester.  One has to get more than 8.5CGPA.

Students of this branch are expected to become entrepreneur, academicians, managers, independent researchers and specialists in the field of Geoinformatics. M. Tech. Remote Sensing and M. Sc. Geoinformatics degrees from BIT are highly recognized, reputed and well accepted in India and Abroad. Our students are placed at Various Leading Institutions in India such as ISRO, IITs, ICAR, NITs, NGOs and Various Government Departments. Our students have good scope of getting admission in International Universities and many of our alumni are currently carrying out higher education in Beijing, Delft-Netherlands, New York etc. Our students also work as Scientist, GIS Analyst/Expert, JRF, SRF and Consultant requiring Geoinformatics skills.  State Remote Sensing Centre, IMD (Indian Meteorological Department), SAC, NRSC, and many governmental organizations, and diverse private sectors are the places where our students get often placed.

One can navigate to the official web site of the institute  (‘bitmesra.ac.in’) and under the CBCS heading, one can find the syllabi of both the courses in the ‘M Tech Section’  (for M.Tech. in Remote Sensing) and ‘Sciences’ Section (for M Sc in Geoinformatics).

Twice a year there is a notification for admission to PhD programme: One during Spring  Semester (Beginning in January, usually announcement is made in the month of November/December) and Monsoon Semester (Beginning in July, usually announcement is made in the month of Mar/April) Exemption from the entrance test is given to those with UGC/CSIR/DBT/BINC/ICMR JRF and all other similar National level fellowship holders but will be required to appear for interview. Student is selected based on performance in written test, previous academic record and interview.

Yes, the Institute Research Fellowship (IRF) is available in limited numbers, based on the performance of the candidate in the admission test, academic record and interview. These IRFs shall be distributed to few top performers. Ph.D. admission test is mandatory for candidate aspiring for the IRF.
