Amongst all branches of engineering, the range and application of civil engineering is the broadest and the most visible. There is great employment prospects for civil engineers in government and public sectors like the railways, municipalities/urban local bodies, Defence, CPWD/PWD, National Highway Authority of India, government development authorities like the DDA, AAI and government housing authority, PSUs and many more. Every year UPSC and state-level PSCs notify vacancies for hundreds of Civil Engineers. No other engineering discipline offers such a vast amount of employment opportunities in government sector as Civil Engineering does!
With the government keen on infrastructure development, private construction companies/firms recruit fresh engineering students every year. Consulting civil engineers liaise with clients to plan, manage, design and supervise the construction of projects. After a few years in the construction sector, the salaries may surpass even those from IT field.
Academically inclined students may opt for Masters and PhD and get absorbed in R & D labs or teaching institutes. Scholars with enterpreneunership skills may even set up their own construction firms or consultancies!
