Department of Electronics and Communication

Overview

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering offers a 4-year undergraduate program leading to a B.E. degree. The branch is one of the core branch started with the inception of the institute. The curriculum of this course is designed to meet current industrial requirements and supported by the Department’s modern laboratories and facilities in all major areas of Electronics and Communication.

Laboratories and Facilities

The Department has modern laboratories and support facilities in all major areas of Electronics and Communication. These includes:
  • Analog and Digital Communication
  • Digital Electronics and Integrated Circuits
  • Circuit Simulation
  • Microprocessor
  • Fiber Optics Communication
  • Instrumentation & Industrial Instrumentation
  • VLSI Design
  • Wireless Communication & Networking
  • Microwave & Advanced Communication, etc.
The Communication laboratories are equipped with Analog Communication kits (like Amplitude Modulation & Demodulation, Frequency modulation & Demodulation, Phase Modulation & Demodulation, and Noise Generator) and Digital Communication Kits (like PCM, PPM, ASK, FSK, PSK, BPSK, QPSK etc).

Commsim Software is also available in the laboratory for designing of wired, wireless and mobile communication systems. Student work on Multisim software to design and test the circuits of Digital Electronics, Basic Electronics and Digital Integrated Analog circuits.

The Fiber Optic Laboratory is well-equipped with Optical to Electrical Converters, Electrical to Optical converters, He-Ne Laser Source, LED and LD Sources and various types of fibers.

The department also has a VLSI Design lab equipped with software like Active HDL, Synplify Pro, Xilinx ISE. There is provision for downloading the VHDL code to FPGA / CPLD Kits which will help students to gain hands-on experience in the area of VLSI design.

The Wireless Communication and Networking Lab is equipped with GSM Trainer Kit, Mobile Communication Trainer Kit and CDMA Trainer Kit. The Laboratory is equipped with simulators like NS-2, Opnet and IT Guru etc. The dept has GPS Trainer, Satellite Trainer Kit etc. for Advence Electronics Lab. Students perform the DSP Lab on Matlab & C and perform the program on kit. Students of BIT Patna performed the hardware lab and each lab is supported by their relevant software packages. Very soon, Cadence Design Tools will also be introduced to help the students work on an industry relevant platform.
Besides these the students of ECE are also proficient in various computer related papers & softwares like C Language, Data Structures, OS, DBMS, etc. The syllabi are frequently updated to incorporate recent developments considering advancements achieved in the national and international scenario.

Departmental Activities

The department conducts seminars and guest lectures at regular intervals on contemporary and advanced topics related to the stream to keep the students updated with all the recent developments. Apart from this, the department organizes industrial trips to places of interest like radio station, weather dept, telecommunication company’s etc for adequate exposure to the students. Each student is assigned the real time project in 3rd & 4th year.

Research & Development

The faculty & students are regularly encouraged to undertake research & projects. Students have taken the projects in: ·R F circuit design (Microstrip Antenna & Microstrip filter) ·Wireless Communication – Hybrid channel allocation schemes & implementing it by using Matlab. ·VLSI design – Current conveyor and its applications/ charge pump circuit and implement it by using C-MOS transmitter. Students participate in various national & international concerts. They participated at the International Workshop on Molecular/Organic Electronic Devices (MOED) organized by BARC, Mumbai and GNDU and some research papers have been accepted as a Regular Research Paper (RRP) for both publication in the proceedings and oral formal presentation in The 2011 International Conference on Wireless Networks (ICWN'11: July 18-21, 2011, USA).
