Extempore 2017

Extempore 2017

“An Oratory Event like never before”

UNESQUO organised an Extempore Competition on August 21, 2017 in the LH 1 at 5.30pm. An extempore speech is the one in which the candidate is required to speak on a topic on the spot. The event aimed at assessing the participants’ communication skills and their command over the language. It puts to test one’s ability to think on the spot and also perform eloquently.

Verbal communication fulfils a number of general and discipline-specific academic functions. Students need to speak well in their personal lives, future workplaces and social interactions. Extempore is one such method which assists the students not only in thinking on their own but also in voicing their creative ideas with precision.

Impromptu Speaking

The participants were given their topics by a lottery system where they had to pick chits on which the topics were given. The topics varied from current issues like “Apple products being overrated” to topics that were completely abstract and hilarious like “Flaunt it, if you have it Big!” They were given a minute to think on the topic and two and a half minute to speak on it.

The orators were in a tumultuous situation as the job wasn’t so easy. One has rightly said, ”For effective extempore speaking, a candidate must be fluent, erudite and articulate.”

The judgment was based on the content, confidence, oratory skills and diction. Akash Choudhuri was adjudged the best speaker. Aishwarya came second, followed by Abhiram at the third place. Arunav Mallik got a special mention for bringing the house down with his humour.

It is said that speech is the mirror of the soul; as a man speaks, so he is. Summing up, the event was a learning experience for all the participants as well as the audience. It motivated students to enhance their vocabulary and oration.
