ARUN JAITLEY: The Mogul of a New India

On August 24th, 2019 India lost one of its prominent politicians and panegyrized BJP leader, Mr. Arun Jaitley. He had opted out of the Modi cabinet this year on the grounds of his deteriorating health. The news shook the nation, which had yet not recovered from the sudden demise of Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, another prominent BJP leader, earlier this month. Mr. Jaitley had always been committed and dedicated to his work, taking up the mantle of responsibility whenever duty called. His spadework in reconstructing the census of BJP as a hardcore right-wing organization and metamorphosizing it into an institution of development first ideology is one of the reasons for his paramountcy in the party. A multifarious personality, Mr. Jaitley thrived in all his domains, whether be it politics, law or economics.

Arun Jaitley was elected as the president of Delhi University Students Union in 1974, which kickstarted his mainstream political career.

Mr. Jaitley has innumerable accolades and contributions to his name, enshrining his golden legacy. Unarguably one of the most intellectually accomplished leaders of BJP, he started his political journey with ABVP, the youth wing of BJP. He was elected as the president of Delhi University Students Union in 1974, which kickstarted his mainstream political career. Since then he has been exalted to numerous high ranking offices, like that of the Minister of Finance, Minister of Corporate Affairs, Minister of Defence, Minister of Information and Broadcasting and others. He has had made his presence felt on the opposition side of the parliament too, during his term as the Leader of Opposition from 2009-2014.

Fathered by Mr. Maharaj Kishen Jaitley, a lawyer himself, Mr. Arun Maharaj Kishen Jaitley received his law education from the University of Delhi after completing B.Com Honours from Sri Ram College of Commerce in 1973. Ever since the days of the Emergency, when he was put under preventive detention for 19 months, one could foresee a fiery and robust politician in him through his active participation in the Janta Dal movement. Right after being released from jail, Arun Jaitley joined the right-wing political party, Jan Sangh. His name has also been joined to the civil rights movement. Along with Satish Jha and Smitu Kothari, he founded the PUCL bulletin. Being a youth leader, he was also appointed as the convener for the National Committee for Students and Youth Organization.

The young Jaitley’s prominence and affluence grew rapidly. Soon after, he was made the convener of the Loktantrik Yuva Morcha. Shortly after joining BJP, in 1980, he became the president of the youth wing of the BJP and the Secretary of the Delhi Unit.

In the capacity of an advocate, Arun Jaitley has had an illustrious career to his name. As the Additional Solicitor General, he worked on the Bofors Scandal. After working at the Supreme Court and several High courts, he was appointed as the Senior Advocate at the  Delhi High Court in 1990. Not only was he appointed as the government of India’s Delegate at the United  Nations General Assembly Session in 1998 but has also written various publications. He presented a legal paper on the corruption and crime in India to the Indo-British Legal Forum. Along with a number of high profile political clients, he has also represented huge corporations like Pepsico in various cases. In June 2009, the politician stopped practicing law after becoming the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. His unique approach to the constitution of India and remarkable methodologies of practice were quite popular among the legal circuits.

Mr. Arun Jaitley led a rather modest life, devoting all his energy and time in the fabrication of a “New India”.

Arun Jaitley has always acted as an inspirational figure for a vast multitude of scholars and politicians. His favorite slogan has always been creating a ‘New India’, a cause for which his work has been instrumental. His stint as the Finance Minister of India shall forever be embossed in history as an amendatory one and palliative for the Indian economy. Whether be it propelling the legendary Goods and Services Tax (GST) or driving the controversial Land Acquisition (amendment) bill, he roared in the parliament with his futuristic views. Further, he used his magnetic charisma to entice all the states to get on board with the GST, a reform that has eased the lives of thousands of businessmen around the country.

With a Brobdingnagian and revered personality as his, Mr. Arun Jaitley led a rather modest life, devoting all his energy and time in the fabrication of a “New India”. All his accomplishments and feats laud his chronicles, chastising his name amongst the legends and nonpareil leaders. He shall forever be celebrated as a luminary figure in the fields of Indian politics, law and economy.
