Dr. Bappa Acherjee joined BIT Mesra in the autumn of 2012 and is presently working as an Assistant Professor (Grade - I) in the Department of Production and Industrial Engineering. Previously he was a Research Fellow under the ‘UGC Research Fellowship for Meritorious Students in Science’ at the Department of Production Engineering, Jadavpur University, for three years, before joining Asansol Engineering College as a faculty for a brief span in 2012. He also served as an Assistant Engineer (Production) at Walzen Strips Pvt. Ltd., Howrah, during 2006-2007.

He holds a B.Tech in Production Engineering from West Bengal University of Technology (2002-2006). He obtained his M.Tech degree from the National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research, Kolkata, in Manufacturing Technology (2007-2009). He received the University Bronze Medal for placing third in B.Tech and the University Silver Medal for placing second in M.Tech. He received his Ph.D. in Engineering from Jadavpur University in 2012, in the field of laser beam welding.

Dr. Acherjee is a passionate educator who is committed to fostering creativity and higher-order thinking in students and enabling them to achieve their educational objectives. He uses his enthusiasm for the application of modern pedagogical approaches and ICT in education to discover creative ways to promote active learning both within and outside the classroom to achieve better learning and productivity goals. He continues to participate in continuing education courses and scientific conferences to stay fresh and informed.

His research interests focus on laser material processing, welding, micro-manufacturing, and the application of the finite element method in manufacturing processes. He has over 100 peer-reviewed research articles to his credit, including journal papers, conference papers, and book chapters; two of those articles were awarded the Elsevier Most Downloaded Paper award. He has delivered a number of invited talks and tutorials, managed various sponsored research projects, and reviewed numerous articles for journals and conferences. He coordinated a few workshops and handled editorial duties for journals and conferences.

Dr. Acherjee is a member of ASME, IAENG, and a life member of IE(I) and IIPE. His biography appeared in 'Marquis Who’s Who in the World' 2011 (28th Edition), 2018 (35th Edition), and '2017 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award'.
