Dr. Vinay Sharma has obtained his master’s degree from Sambalpur University, Odisha, and has completed his Doctoral research in “Water Jet Cutting”, from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra Ranchi.

He has joined DRDO as a Senior Research Fellow and successfully completed several projects. For his excellent work in DRDO, he got a DRDO award. He joined the Department of Production Engineering, Birla Institute of Technology Mesra Ranchi India in February 1999 as Assistant Professor. In 2011 he became a Full Professor.

He is a prolific researcher with 100 publications in high-quality journals and conferences, indexed by SCOPUS/SCI. He has mentored 25 Master's students and 06 PhD candidates in their academic journey. He also possesses a Six Sigma black belt certification, demonstrating his expertise in quality management.

He is the Principal Investigator of the UGC Major Research project “Microwave Welding” " coordinator of the Nationally Coordinated Project (NCP) of AICTE, “Deformation and Fracturing Behavior of Metallic Foams” and has obtained FIST-II project from DST.

He was the coordinator of the project for “Time and Motion Study for Payment of Waged to Workers” in the State under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005(NREGA), Rural Development Department Government of Jharkhand February 2008,   

He has a patent in his name, patent number Patent 338236 dated 6^th June 2012. “Aluminum metal foam and a process for preparation thereof,

He is one of the few researchers who have used VSM (Value stream mapping) to identify energy wastage in manufacturing systems.

He is one of the few researchers who have captured the EMR (electromagnetic radiation) in incremental sheet metal forming.

He has published books a few books and book chapters

He is a member of “The American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME)” (since 2006), “Fellow” of the Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI)”, a Life Member of “The Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE)”, a Life Member of “Indian Science Congress”, Life Member of Powder Metallurgy Association of India (PMAI), Life Member of Additive Manufacturing Society of India (AMSI), Member of “International Production and Operation Management Society”

His field of interest is advanced manufacturing and Quality engineering.

At present, he is working in the field of Production of  Micro EDM, Incremental micro-forming, microwave-assisted welding, Sustainable Manufacturing Systems, and Supply chain.
