M.Sc. in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology

About the Programme

The M.Sc. Bioinformatics and Computational Biology

The Post-Graduation programme in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology is being started from this year (2023-24) at BIT Jaipur Campus. This program is designed to impart key informatics skill-set, highly useful in analysing Big Data in biology including Genomics, Transcriptomics, Proteomics and Metabolomics. The students would be taught necessary computational skills to make sense of real life data. The prospective students are expected to have basic knowledge of biology, mathematics and statistics. However, the students would also be provided with an opportunity to make-up for the deficiencies by way of chosing program electives and/or open electives over the Institute-wide bouquet of courses offered by different departments. There is a provision for obtaining a PG diploma after successful completion of two semesters if one wishes so.

For the designed courses in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, the institution has excellent academic and experimental infrastructure. In addition the facilities of Advanced Bioinformatics Center at Birla Institute of Scientific Research, Statue Circle, Jaipur would also be available to the students. Eminent Bioinformatics professionals from other centers of higher learning and industries will also be regularly invited to visit the campus to interact with students and to deliver lectures and conduct workshops. The student has the option of undertaking research project of his interest or partaking in the existing research projects of BISR. As this field is IT enabled as well as biotechnology based, the course structure and the labs have been planned accordingly to accommodate both the aspects. The course structure is avalable here.

The M.Sc. Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Programme provides value addition to the undergraduate students interested in this discipline and opens up scope for specialization and tremoundous research potential in the form of PhD or post doctoral opportunities in India or Abroad. Same way, it provides ample knowledge and technical expertise to deal with big data in biology related to personal medicine, computer aided drug design and precision agriculture to create your own start-up. After successful completion of the course the students would get the M.Sc. Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Degree awarded by Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi.

Academic System:

The Program shall adopt a semester system comprising of two semesters (Monsoon and Spring) in an academic year. The Monsoon semester will be held during August to December while the Spring Semester will be from January to May. The M.Sc. Bioinformatics and Computational Biology program will run over a span of 2 years (4 semesters) where the final semester is exclusively devoted to research.

The Institute at Mesra is located in a spacious green campus. There are small forests with a large number of trees – mostly sal trees which  are  native to Chotanagpur. These  sal trees and  a number of other trees and plants have their flowering season during mid-February to early April, and this sometimes leads to a large pollen content in the air. It has been noted that some people who are allergic or susceptible to pollen from these sal trees / other plants may develop some  health problems / breathing problems or  their existing problems may  be  aggravated during  these weeks, as also  during  some  other months of the year  when  other plants flower. Thus, such  candidates who are  known  to be  sensitive or susceptible to pollen  from  trees or other plants are  required to get allergy tests done / take advice from their physicians / a specialist before taking admission at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi.
