One-week Workshop on Chromatography and Mass spectrometry (26th Sept-01st Oct. 2016)

One-Week Workshop On

Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry

(26th Sept. – 01st October, 2016)

For over six decades, Birla Institute of Technology has been engaged in nurturing minds through a rich heritage of academic excellence. Essentially a hub of bustling student activities, the beautiful campus has been a second-home to thousands of students in their journey to challenge the times. This institute was established in 1955 by visionary-industrialist Mr. B.M. Birla. It is today one of the most premier engineering destinations in India. BIT, Mesra had been conceived with a vision to be recognized as a world-class learning institution for engineering and technology. But it has moved beyond the fulfilment of a scholastic promise to re-defining education in the new age through creation of aptitude and comprehensive intelligence. Targets are achieved every day, only to make space for newer dreams.

The Department of Bio-Engineering (Formerly known as Department of Biotechnology) was established in 2002 with financial support from the Department of Agriculture, Government of Jharkhand, with objectives like providing education and training facilities, carrying out application oriented research, developing in-house technologies and promoting consultancy services in various areas of Biotechnology. The Department of Bio-Engineering has been engaged in imparting international standard quality education and research in the field of Bio-science, Bio-technology and Bio-engineering and in promoting collaboration with Academia, Industries and Research Organizations at National and International level.

The Aims of Centre of Excellence, Department of Bio-Engineering, BIT Mesra is to deploy, use, exploit and leverage biotechnology as an effective tool for catalyzing accelerated economic growth by sustainably harnessing and converting its biowealth into economic wealth on one hand and preserving the same on the other.

Chromatography and Mass spectrometry are the pillars of chemical analysis and is like an axle on which the chemical industries revolve; this alone can be the reason that these topics are taught at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students of biological sciences and engineering. While these subjects are dealt in theoretical classes majority of the students do not have an opportunity or access to familiarize these students with instruments during their academic years in the college. When the students face the challenge of working with these instruments in their research career or industry jobs, they would definitely feel that it would have been better for them to have seen and worked with these instruments during their college days. It is also felt that the teachers, who are teaching these subjects also would like to have some contact time with these instruments so that they have sufficient practical experience to teach these modules quite effectively to students.

The objective of the present workshop is to provide one-week training for the teachers/scientist of different universities and Institutes, who would be interested in getting hands on experience with various chromatographic and mass spectrometric instruments. Taking into consideration the importance of this workshop, the Centre of Excellence, Department of Bioengineering under TEQIP-II have decided to support this training both morally and financially, thus subsidizing the course of the teachers/scientist.

The number of participants for this workshop will be restricted to 20, as hands-on training will be difficult for a larger audience. The selection of participants will be made on the basis of recommendation of screening committee.

The seven days programme is accommodated into 6 days’ schedule by extending the number of working hours each day thus not compromising on any of the theoretical or practical contents.

The instructors of the course are well versed with the respective techniques and are selected from the academia and the industry.

The course for the entire duration of 6 days will be Rs. 2000 only; this includes working lunch, tea and snacks on each day.

On completion of the course participants will be given a certificate for completing the course satisfactorily. 100% attendance is mandatory for this workshop; otherwise certificate will not be issued.

The details of registration and payment are included in the separate registration form.
