Students with First class or minimum 60% marks in average (45% for SC/ST and 55% for sponsored candidates) in Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engg., Aeronautical Engg., Mechanical Engg., Chemical Engg. or equivalent are eligible to apply.

Candidates should preferably be GATE qualified. Non-GATE candidates may also apply but will be considered only after GATE qualified candidates are considered and interviewed.

Candidates can fill up the online application form available at website of the Institute normally in March / April every year.

The department currently offers Master of Technology (2 year, 4 semester programme) with specialization in Rocket Propulsion and Aerodynamics. Also, candidates can enrol in PhD programme in the fields of Computational and Experimental Aerodynamics and Rocket Propulsion, Propellant Technology, and Combustion.

 Candidates can indicate their choices for various programmes in the order of preference in the application form.   

Candidates admitted with valid GATE score are eligible for scholarship during their normal course of study. PhD candidates are eligible to get scholarship from different funding agencies like CSIR / UGC / Institute as per norms.

- Institute Research Fellowships are available for selected PhD candidates.

- In selected cases, projects are partially funded by the Institute.

- BIT also offers GP Birla Scholarship to students.

The Department has state of the art experimental facilities in Aerodynamics and Rocket propulsion. Laboratories include low speed and supersonic wind tunnels, static rocket test facility for solid, liquid and hybrid rockets. Apart from these, rocket propulsion lab has facilities such as low and high pressure burning rate facilities for solid propellant, ignition and combustion facility for liquid and hybrid propellants, propellant processing lab., combustion and thermal analysis lab. etc.

 The department provides Departmental Library, Computing Facility, Workshop Facility, Seminar Halls, and Study Room, within its premises.

- Graduates of this department can join different research laboratories in premier organizations like ISRO, DRDO, VSSC, NAL, HAL, and ADA.

- They have internship opportunities in the emerging space startups in India.

- They can opt for private and academic jobs besides pursuing Doctoral Programmes in India and abroad.

 Hostel accommodation is provided to all students opting to stay on the campus.

- After completion of one year of stay, students can visit different National research labs and industries related to the domain of study.

- They can also undergo internship at different academic institutions, research laboratories, and space startups.

- Invited lectures delivered by our expert alumni in the related fields are regularly arranged as part of our Alumni Lecture Series.

- Student activities: The department undertakes co-curricular activities as part of the Space & Rockerty Club run by our students. Our activities include hobby rocketry, group discussions, hands-on sessions, and star gazing.

- Institute encourages total personality development and excellent facilities for extra-curricular activities include a large Sports Complex, several Activity Clubs and Societies.
