Introduction
The Department of Architecture was established at BIT Mesra in the year 1993, in keeping with the multifarious scope of Architecture as the art and science of designing spaces and adding value to a meaningful, built environment. It is a subject which is a combination of faculties of engineering, science as well as arts. The programme is a balanced combination of all these streams, yet follows a unique pedagogical methodology that is its hallmark.

The Department ranks 5th among all colleges of Architecture in India as per the survey of Eduways in 2013.
In 2012 survey of Outlook, same as last two years, the Department of Architecture of BIT Mesra has been placed within the first ten among the 300 colleges of Architecture in India.
The Department of Architecture has ranked 2nd among the private colleges that offer architecture, with only Sir JJ College of Architecture of Mumbai (the oldest architecture college in India) ahead of it.

The course structure is poised between theoretical knowledge and its practical application with ample application-based lab subjects evenly distributed throughout the syllabus. The practical orientation of working in an actual office is also taken care of in the Practical Training subject in the final year of the course.
Students also get a scope to exercise the applicability of the entire course learning in the Final Year Thesis dissemination. Architecture students find rewarding employment in planning, design and construction industries. Many pursue higher stuides in India and abroad in the fields of City Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Conservation, Construction Management - to name a few.
Programmes
The department offers a five year Bachelor of Architecture
course, admission to which is cconformed as per the Regulations
of Council of Archiecture, India. The department also offers the
degree of Master of Urban Planning, approved by AICTE and
the Institute of Town Planners, India (ITPI).
The Department of Architecture invites research applications
throughout the year and currently eight scholars are enrolled
in its Ph.D. programme.

Collaborative Endeavours
BIT is the Resource Institute for the State of Jharkhand for Disaster Management programmes. The architecture department had jointly organized with the Department of Civil engineering four short-term courses for National Capacity Building Programme for Engineers and Architects in Earthquake Risk Management (NCBPEERM).

The Department has the rare feat of being the first ever academic institute of Architecture to be awarded research grants under the Department Research Support (DRS) level of the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) of the University Grants Commission (UGC). |
The department is also closely associated with training institutes like Sri Krishna Institute of Public Administrators (ATI), Ranchi and National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology, Ranchi. Faculty members of the department regularly visit these institutes to deliver lectures in varied subjects related to Architecture, Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Disaster Management, GIS, Steel Structure and the like.
The Department, under the approval of COA and under the supervision of NIASA, Pune is developing a NATA Test Centre in its premises. The centre would be soon operational. Further details would be posted on this page.
ABACUS (ISSN: 0973-8339)
Since 2006, the Department publishes a bi-annual journal on Architecture, Conservation and Urban Studies named ABACUS. The journal is refereed by an international panel of eminent architects and planners from the field of academics and industry.
| With the first issue released in Monsoon 2006, BIT created another milestone by pioneering the first ever researched journal in the field of Architecture and Planning being published from an academic institution. |
